Loyola Anthropologists Head to Vancouver for 2019 AAA Conference

Ruth Gomberg-Mu帽oz, Catherine Nichols, and Thea Strand attended the in late November, presenting original research and participating in a variety of events. This year鈥檚 AAA conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, and organized jointly with CASCA (the Canadian Anthropological Society/Soci茅t茅 Canadienne d鈥橝nthropologie).

Ruth Gomberg-Mu帽oz presented a paper titled 鈥淐hanging Climates of Migrant Rights Organizing in Mexico City and Chicago鈥 in an Executive session focused on 鈥淭he Migrant Caravan and Legacies of Violence: The Changing Climate of Immigration and Asylum at the U.S./Mexican Border and Beyond鈥. As President of the Society for the Anthropology of North America (SANA), Dr. Gomberg-Mu帽oz also presided over that section鈥檚 board meeting and business meeting, and she chaired a roundtable discussion of four new ethnographies of immigrant policing in the United States.

Catherine Nichols was a presenter in a roundtable session on 鈥淭he Politics and Stewardship of Collections Data in a Digital Climate.鈥

Thea Strand presented a paper titled 鈥淒eploying and Revaluing Dialect in the Poetic Economy of Rural Norwegian Tourism,鈥 part of an Invited session titled 鈥淧oetic Economies and Language Revitalization: New Approaches Inspired by Alexandra (Misty) Jaffe.鈥 Dr. Strand also participated as a presenter in a memorial session for the late Misty Jaffe.
